Frost Delays
Anyone that is an early morning golfer in our region will be confronted at one time or another with a frost delay at the local golf course. And most serious players know that the frost must clear off the grass before play can begin. Here’s why.
Water is the primary component of plant tissue. When there is frost on the plant, the water inside the plant leaf is frozen. When someone walks on the plant, the frozen ice crystals on the plant leaf puncture the cell walls, killing the plant tissue and turning the plant black and eventually straw colored.
Generally, if the frost is light, the damage will repair itself in time. If the frost is heavy however, permanent damage can occur. This is why we take frost very seriously and delay play until it is safe to begin. Although inconvenient at times, we are confident you will agree it is worth a small delay to ensure great course conditions for everyone.
So the next time you get caught in a frost delay, just relax and enjoy the morning while the sun does its work. The Pro Shop Staff will do its best to get you out on the course as soon as possible.
